Description

Red Planet on Mon 14 Mar 2022.

After weeks of rain and cloudy weather I could finally make another Mars attempt this morning. This capture was made at 5:36 am AEDT with the planet still below 30 degrees in rapidly deteriorating seeing. By about 5:50 am the whole sky was covered with a thick blanket of fog which made even the bright Venus difficult to see.

Despite challenging conditions I think I managed to record Arsia Mons shadow (11 o'clock in the Sth Up view) and Olympus Mons caldera (white spot at 9 o'clock), both in late Martian afternoon. Polar cap and Mare Sirenum dominate high southern latitudes; there also appears to be a bright linear feature paralleling SPC edge.

The planet has increased slightly in angular size but is still below 5". Picture centered on the Amazonis region, resized 150%.
